Other people hike in the summer. But you do not just want to go hiking, but to experience something, to live in the wilderness, in the woods, in the mountains, for a few days, a whole week – and to beat nature. No supermarket, no shower and no car far and wide – live far away from civilization.
Regardless of whether with the son pending a camping adventure holiday in the local forest or a trip with the best friend to the Canadian Wilderness, here are the most important basic survival tips for your hiking and trekking adventure vacation.
The base camp
The ideal place to pitch your tent is the one that – of course – offers beautiful views and water. A level and dry surface is also important. Once the tent is up, the fire comes next. Dry wood is the basis for this – especially the wood of the cedars is suitable. Thanks to the oil it burns brilliantly – but not too long. Pests do not like cedar oil – so if you are planning to build a wooden hut, you are also well served by the red cedar wood.
Definitely on the trip you need to have waterproof shoes with profile, a functional jacket, enough warm clothes, knives, flashlights, a small first-aid kit and a navigation device for those who can not yet orient themselves to the starry sky but better would be the use of a compass.
The food and drink
The forest provides plenty of food – but only for those who have the necessary knowledge. The root of the licorice fern tastes delicious and juicy, otherwise there are many edible roots and tree bark. In summer, adventurers one should also rely on mushrooms and berries, bears only for the brave, so that real delicacies can be prepared. However, if you do not know much about berries & plants, you should get support – for example, use a “small encyclopedia of edible wild plants”. Otherwise canned food is suitable for the trip – from bean soup to pasta dishes.
A water tank and enough drinking water should not be missing on the adventure trip – it is best to inform yourself in advance whether sufficient spring water is available. If you do not want to give up your tasty drinks – there are even options here like tea or other juices: The tea powder from ice tea options packs could save space as you just add a pack into your water when desired.
Bears were resettled not only in Canada but also in the Alps. And otherwise they also occur in many hiking regions. Basically, bears are more likely to get out of your way, but if a bear is surprised when it comes to a berry breakfast, it can be quite annoying: why you make noise on the go, then the big fluffy cuddly wild baby will stay out of the way.
Also: bears are attracted by smells. Therefore pack your food odor-proof and do not use deodorant or perfume on your treks! It is best to sleep in the middle of the tent at night – because bears and wolves often bite through a tent if they suspect something edible there. So you might wake up in time to get away.
